Leather furniture is without doubt one of the best selling styles of furniture around and you will find pieces that can cost many thousands of dollars. New leather furniture can be pretty expensive but items like antique leather chairs can cost even more. Antique leather chairs, or any antique pieces for that matter, are going to be more expensive than new pieces for a number of reasons.
Leather today is treated with a load of chemicals which enhance the colors, protect the leather and to extend its life. The chemicals do a good job of what they are supposed to do, but they also change how the leather feels, they make it stiffer. Furniture made using old leather isn’t going to suffer this problem, if the leather still looks good then it is going to last you for many more years if you keep on looking after it.
The second reason is that if you buy a new piece of leather furniture you are only pay for the leather. If your furniture is antique you are not only paying for the leather, but also the craftsmanship and just because it is an antique, this can actually add quite a lot onto the price depending in the age, style and who made it.
There are three places to find antique leather chairs. The best buys will be found at yard sales. A lot of the time the seller doesn’t know they have a valuable antique so you can get some good prices. Another great place is at estate sales. In cases like this they will probably know a little bit more about the furniture but if they are in a hurry to get everything sold you might be able to get the price down to lower than you would find at an antique store. Then finally you have the internet. Be wary of who you buy from online, some sellers will tell you a piece in antique just because it is designed in the style of the period rather than being made during the period.
